Rainbows

Last week while driving into work I noticed two mini rainbows. They were straight up and down, an arrow to the ground. As the highway went up and down and around the hills and in and out of valleys at least one of them was always in view, one in the east and one to the south.

Rainbows seem to be a symbol of hope, always attracting attention for their beauty and simplicity. These definitely caught my attention. A bright point in the day.

We've always called these sundogs. They seem to be happy, magical occurences, signifying something very good! (something more than ice crystals)

Today was a sundog day on Coast Guard Beach in Eastham. As the sun got lower in the west there was a strongly-colored sundog to the north... visible from the water's edge. Hiking back up the pathway over the dune, then past the Coast Guard station itself, I saw the smaller one to the south at last. After such a sad week in Wellfleet, I hoped these sundogs signified brighter days ahead...in time.

Speaking of rainbows, I requested and Chuck played Rainbow Connection by Kermit (the frog) on WOMR a week or so ago. It wasn't his usual genre of folk-love-peace-ocean songs, but it was optimistic punctuation between those, and made me happy. You know how mothers are...the song touched me when I was expecting my first son, then again when the kids sang it in an elemenary school concert, and again in these days of missing the kids and looking for community connections. So I keep coming back to sundogs and rainbows as messages
connecting us with this beautiful
world, for which I am very thankful. I'm thankful, too, for your writing. Kermit sings the song online, check it out if you're interested.
peace,
